FROM PRIME MINISTER FIAME NAOMI MATAAFA. [4th June 2025]
Talofa lava Samoa,
The ceremonies marking the 63rd Anniversary of Independence have concluded, which began with a church service on the evening of Sunday, June 1st, led by the National Council of Churches. I express gratitude to the President of the Methodist Church who led the service and to the Reverends for the prayers and the chosen choirs for the hymns.
I also extend sincere appreciation to everyone that attended and took part in the celebrations. Our guests of honor, the Honorable Governor of American Samoa and the Head of Tokelau. The members of the Diplomatic Corps, Heads of Ministries and Corporations, civil societies, and the business community. And particularly the students who participated in the flag raising ceremony and the March parade. It was great to see everyone enjoying the occasion.
The Head of State’s address recapitulated our praises to God for His love and grace that has kept our journey safe over these 63 years. With the determination that Samoa will uphold the noble foundations of our tradition and culture in unity to pursue a prosperous future for all of us.
Yesterday, Tuesday 3rd June, the order of the Head of State to dissolve Parliament became effective. Today, Wednesday, a motion from the Office of the Electoral Commission is before the Court to seek declaratory judgement on timelines to conduct the General Election that the country will be preparing for.
In the meantime, I along with Cabinet continue to serve as the Executive Caretaker Government to continue operations until a new government is formed after the upcoming general election.
The main issue awaiting a decision from the Court is the timing of the Election.
These are a few announcements to keep our community informed of some of the preparations that are underway.
SOIFUA.
